Why motivation starts with “Why”

At our recent business networking breakfast, Tim brought a fresh perspective on motivation, moving beyond the usual hype and encouragement. Instead, he focused on the importance of understanding what genuinely drives us - and why this is essential not just in our personal lives, but also in business.
Tim’s central point was that success, whether in business, sport, or personal pursuits, often hinges on discovering and articulating our core motivation - our “why”. This concept, popularised by Simon Sinek’s “golden circle” model, argues that most people and organisations start with what they want to do and how they will do it, but rarely stop to ask why they’re doing it in the first place.
However, Tim pointed out that when we lead with our “why”, everything else falls into place more naturally. The “how” - our methods, values, and approach - flows from this deeper sense of purpose, and the “what” - the tangible products or services we deliver - becomes a natural extension. In practice, this means that whether you’re running a business, supporting mental health, or even working in education or sales, understanding and clearly expressing your motivation creates a stronger foundation and a more coherent message.
As a member of Carrot networking Tim represents Whispering Trees. He demonstrates how having the ‘why’ at the centre of what they do is so important to them. Their motivation is to help people connect with nature, others, and themselves by promoting mental wellbeing. This guiding principle shapes the way the organisation operates and the kind of services offered, from educational sessions for young people to therapeutic activities for adults.
He also drew a parallel with education: when children or young people understand why they’re learning something, rather than just being told what to do, they are much more engaged and motivated. The same is true in sales, where understanding a client’s underlying motivation leads to more meaningful and successful relationships.
How does this relate to networking and small business?
These ideas are especially relevant in the world of small business networking. In our experience, the most authentic and fruitful connections are formed not when people simply promote their services, but when they share what truly motivates them. A clearly articulated “why” doesn’t just help you communicate your brand - it helps others understand what you stand for and why you do what you do.
This openness naturally builds trust, which is the foundation of any strong network.
When people see that your motivation goes beyond profit, and is rooted in real values or a desire to make a difference, they are much more likely to connect, support, or refer to you. Furthermore, as a business owner, regularly reflecting on your “why” helps you stay focused and resilient, especially during challenging times.
Ultimately, starting with “why” makes networking feel less transactional and more like building a supportive community.
That’s exactly the spirit we foster at Carrot Business Networking. Our group is all about relationship-based, person-centred business growth. Rather than just exchanging business cards, we focus on building genuine connections, sharing contacts, making useful introductions, offering referrals, and collaborating to help each other’s businesses thrive. The positive and encouraging atmosphere means you’re not just expanding your network – you’re joining a community that’s invested in your success as well as its own.
If you’re looking for more than just another business breakfast, but want to be part of a group where trust and support come first, Carrot could be the perfect fit.
We always welcome new members who share these values and are ready to grow together.
